After a midair panel detaches, the FAA orders the Boeing 737 Max 9 to be temporarily grounded.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) unexpectedly declared that several Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft operated by American airlines will be temporarily grounded. The decision was made in response to a concerning event that happened on an Alaska Airlines flight: a panel seemed to separate in midair.

Safety First: Inspections Needed Right Away

Approximately 171 out of 218 Boeing 737 Max 9 aircraft globally are impacted by the FAA rule. These aircraft must undergo immediate inspections before they are allowed to fly again. Safety is the first concern, according to FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker, and the decision is in keeping with the current investigation into the Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 incident.

Alaska Airlines Acts

All 65 of Alaska Airlines’ 737 Max 9 aircraft were immediately grounded for maintenance and safety checks. In 25% of the checks, there were no alarming results, allowing 18 aircraft to be put back into operation. It is anticipated that the remaining inspections will be finished in the upcoming days.

Boeing Backs FAA Rumination

Boeing emphasized that safety is their first concern and offered full support for the FAA's decision. The National Transportation Safety Board is actively collaborating with a committed Boeing technical team to support its investigation into the Alaska Airlines incident.

Passenger Testimony of Horrifying In-Flight Event

A pressurization problem forced Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, which was headed for Ontario International Airport, to return to Portland. Elizabeth, a passenger, related the terrifying moment when the plane suddenly burst into a large hole due to a loud blast. Thankfully, no significant injuries were reported, and despite the unforeseen incident, the passengers maintained their composure.

Industry Reaction and Continued Inquiries

In reacting to the event, Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg promised constant coordination with the FAA. In order to maintain aviation safety as the aviation community deals with the temporary grounding, investigations will continue to provide light on the reason behind the midair panel detachment.
